Japan plans to improve its chances of taking home the gold (from the Daily Yomiuri)
Poor performances by top Japanese athletes in international competitions, including the Olympic Games, have prompted the Education, Science and Technology Ministry to establish a government-sponsored system to help them win medals at the 2012 London Olympics … under the project, the ministry will join the JOC to play a direct role in helping athletes. For eight events in five sports, special 11-member assistance teams will be established … In addition to coaches, scientists–including psychologists, physiologists and nutritionists–medical doctors, trainers, information gatherers and engineers who develop athletic equipment will be included in the teams to help athletes win medals.
I’m tempted to say, what’s the point? But, I mean, I understand a lot of countries probably do stuff like this. But somehow it just doesn’t seem sporting …
